Scott and Colleen Dewhurst got his big break when he co-starred with Julia Roberts in the 1991 drama Dying Young. ![]() Some years ago, a young actor named Campbell Scott was hailed as a new Hollywood heartthrob. 14 after its current engagement at The Actor’s Playhouse in Coral Gables. His popular series, Unsolved Mysteries, is still in syndication and - making a posthumous Broadway debut - his recorded voice provides the commentary accompanying a stage revival of Little Shop of Horrors, due to open Aug. The actor’s legacy, which includes an Emmy for his role as Eliot Ness in TV’s The Untouchables, will live on. He was one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors until he married actress Rosemarie Bowe in 1956 the couple, who had two children, remained together for 47 years, until Stack’s death on May 14. To his dismay, the studio ordered him to darken his blond hair for the role, but it proved so popular with fans that he remained dark-haired for much of his career. Stack’s voice was only part of the package that made him a teen idol when he debuted opposite Deanna Durbin in 1939’s First Love. He didn’t begin learning his native tongue until he returned to the United States shortly before his parents remarried in 1928. The son of a California advertising executive, he moved with his mother to Europe at age 1 when his parents divorced, and grew up speaking French and Italian. Stack’s memorable diction was partly the result of good genes - his mother and uncle were opera singers - and partly because English was not his first language.
